OA Author Funds

Many research institutions and funders have created Gold Open Access authors funds.

Under open access, the money that keeps the publisher in business comes from the same sources as in the traditional publishing model, with the exception that it is delivered before an article is published in the form of an article processing charge (APC) rather than being paid after publication to provide researchers with immediate access.

A list of funds to support OA journals has been started and is being updated through the Open Access Directory. The funds may be hosted by universities, research centers, foundations, or government agencies.

You can find the entire list here.

All the funds listed here are designed to pay publication fees at fee-based OA journals. If funds emerge to support no-fee OA journals, they belong here as well.

You should check each funders policy for the launch dates, end dates (if any), special criteria, funding limits or cost-ceilings, and other notable features.

Institutions that are curious to better understand why funds are being launched, the considerations and decisions involved in their creation, and how existing funds are being managed, should check SPARC'S Campus-based Open-access Publishing Funds Practical Guide to Design and Implementation, where a document of North American Open Access funds in action can also be downloaded.
